PROJECT: ROOTED + REFINED

This living room will be thoughtfully designed to feel warm, sophisticated, and deeply inviting while supporting the way the space is used every day. Drawing inspiration from rich earth tones and deep greens, the design will introduce a layered color story that complements the existing architecture while adding depth and personality. Soft neutrals will provide balance while carefully selected accent pieces bring in warmth and visual interest.

The space will be arranged to function as a comfortable multi-purpose living area, with seating that encourages conversation, relaxation, and everyday use. A dedicated reading nook will create a quiet corner for unwinding, while a slim media console and thoughtful furniture placement will ensure the room feels both functional and well proportioned.

Texture will play a key role in creating a refined yet lived-in atmosphere. Materials such as velvet, leather, warm wood, and subtle metal accents will be layered throughout the room to build richness and dimension. The final design will feel curated and collected—modern in its structure, yet warm, personal, and timeless.

Client Goals

Here’s a quick recap of the goals for your space—how you want it to feel, how you plan to use it, and the overall vibe we’re aiming for. These are based on what we discussed together along with the information you shared in your project questionnaire. Take a moment to review and let me know if there’s anything you’d like to adjust or add.

Mood Board

Think of it as the “vibe preview” — it helps you see how everything will come together before any purchasing or installation happens. This is where we align on direction, mood, and style to make sure the design feels intentional, cohesive, and true to you.

Once approved, the mood board guides all sourcing and design decisions moving forward.

Rooted + Refined

The goal for this space is to create a warm, layered family room that feels elevated while still being comfortable for everyday life. The direction we are exploring blends grounded materials, soft textures, and thoughtful contrast so the room feels both welcoming and polished.

At the center of the design is a rich olive green sofa, which introduces depth and warmth while anchoring the room’s color palette. The surrounding layers—textured pillows, a patterned rug, and natural materials—help create a collected and comfortable feel that still feels refined.

Your existing artwork plays an important role in the room’s story. Rather than replacing it, the recommendation is to re-frame the piece with a more modern, textured frame and matting. This approach elevates the artwork and allows it to feel intentional and gallery-like within the space.

To complement the warmth of the palette, we’ve incorporated antique brass and soft gold metals through elements like the drink table, decorative accents, and lighting. These metals introduce a subtle glow and help balance the deeper tones in the room.

For seating, we are exploring two possible chair directions:

• Option One: sculptural accent chairs that bring a more modern, architectural feel
• Option Two: rounded barrel chairs that feel cozy and conversational

Both options support the goal of creating a welcoming seating arrangement for family time and hosting guests.

A round black coffee table helps ground the seating area while introducing contrast against the softer textures of the rug and upholstery.

In the fireplace area, we are exploring two possible directions:

Option A — Natural Architecture
Keeping the existing brick and shelving as they are, allowing the warmth of the current materials to remain part of the room’s character.

Option B — Updated Contrast
Painting the brick a lighter tone while introducing a rich olive color to the built-in shelving. This option creates stronger visual contrast and adds depth to the architectural wall.

If the shelving remains in its current finish, another option we can explore is adding wallpaper to the back panels of the shelving to introduce additional texture, pattern, and layering without changing the overall architecture.

Finally, the addition of a textured sideboard / media console brings warmth through wood tones while adding visual interest with its detailed surface. This piece helps balance the room by bringing together the darker tones, metals, and organic textures used throughout the design.

Overall, this direction aims to create a space that feels grounded, layered, and collected—while still being comfortable enough for everyday living and family gatherings.

Reading Nook

A Quiet Corner to Pause

Near the patio doors, we have an opportunity to create a small reading nook—an intentional space that feels slightly separate from the main seating area while still connected to the room. This corner can become a place to sit with a book, enjoy morning coffee, or simply take in the natural light coming through the doors.

To explore the direction for this space, we’re considering two different chair styles, both designed to feel comfortable while still contributing to the overall design of the room.

Option One: Sculptural Cream Chair
This direction features a soft cream chair with sculptural lines and warm wood accents. The light upholstery keeps the corner feeling airy and balanced against the deeper tones in the sofa and surrounding furniture. Paired with a sculptural black side table and a framed piece of artwork, this option introduces a quiet, modern elegance while allowing the textures in the room to stand out.

Option Two: Warm Sienna / Burnt Orange Chair
This option introduces a richer tone through a warm sienna or burnt orange chair. The deeper color adds warmth and creates a beautiful contrast against the olive sofa and neutral rug. Paired with a brass side table and a sculptural wall piece, this direction feels slightly more dramatic and brings another layer of depth to the palette.

Both options work beautifully with the overall concept for the living room, and we can also explore mixing elements from both directions depending on what feels most aligned with your personal style.

As we continue refining the design, I’d love to know which direction feels most appealing to you:
• the lighter sculptural chair, or
• the warmer sienna-toned chair.

This will help guide the final sourcing for the reading nook and ensure the space feels both intentional and personal to your home.

Material Palette

Here’s a collection of colors, fabrics, finishes, and textures for your project. This helps set the tone and visual foundation for everything.

Initial Selections

These pieces are initial selections to help us begin shaping the overall direction of your space. You’ll see a range of chairs, and coffee tables and other decor that explore different silhouettes, proportions, and subtle color variations.

Concept

The design concept is the overall vision and creative direction for your space. This goes beyond individual pieces and focuses on how everything works together — colors, textures, materials, finishes, and styling details.

It tells the story of the room and sets the tone for how the space will feel once completed. The concept guides all design decisions moving forward, ensuring the final space feels cohesive, intentional, and aligned with your style.
